Cancer patient? Needing help getting to hospital?

Bo’ness Car 4U is a FREE friendly hospital transport service for cancer patients, registered with any Bo’ness medical practice.

Please keep visiting this website and look out on social media for updates.

Let us give you a lift!

Getting to and from hospital for cancer treatment appointments can be difficult. Public transport can be infrequent and expensive, while driving involves the stress of traffic and hospital parking.

Bo’ness Car 4U is a small local charity made up of volunteers who aim to remove these worries by doing the driving for you for FREE – making the journey to hospital as pleasant and stress free as possible.

It’s easy. Here’s how the service works!

Ask about Bo’ness Car 4U at your local GP practice.

To use the service, you’ll need to allow your medical practice to pass on your name and phone number to us. Once you’ve given permission, the practice will only forward your contact details to us. That is all we need to know. We’ll then phone you to discuss your appointment times and any special requirements you have. (Please read our privacy policy here.)

Once we know your appointment times and dates we’ll allocate you a driver and give you their name and vehicle description. Volunteer drivers and patients will both undertake a Lateral Flow self-test just prior to the drive. This is a sensible step to provide a further level of protection for everyone and must be complied with.

Your driver will contact you to arrange a pick-up time the day before your drive. This means you will know exactly who is taking you to hospital and the time you need to be ready.

The driver will collect you from your home and take you to hospital.

Because of COVID we are asking adult patients to travel alone although they can be accompanied by a friend in exceptional circumstances. Please talk to us, if this applies to you. However, we will always insist an adult accompanies a child using the service.

Patients and any accompanying passenger must be able to get into and out of the volunteer’s vehicle on their own. Our volunteers are not trained in lifting people and will not do so. We have a duty of care towards those being conveyed but also to the welfare of our volunteers.

Should the patient be a wheelchair user, they must arrange for someone to be at their home at the time of pick up to assist getting them into the BC4U vehicle and also be available to assist there at the time of return home. Otherwise the patient will have to arrange to travel for treatment using the Scottish Ambulance Service.

The driver will wait at the hospital during your appointment and take you straight home afterwards.

That’s it. Sounds good! Here’s what to do next . . .
